Ideal Cholesterol Readings

Understanding your cholesterol readings

Hoping for ideal cholesterol readings? But not sure what your cholesterol readings even mean?

Your life insurance cholesterol readings can be better understood with the following information in hand.

Remember, these cholesterol readings are for the purpose of risk evaluation in obtaining life insurance only, and they are not a substitute for medical care.

It is important to understand there are many possible reasons for variations in normal levels of cholesterol. Only your Physician can diagnose a medical condition. If you have any questions or concerns about the cholesterol readings, please discuss them with your personal Physician.

Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a blood lipid (fat) which is associated with increased risk of developing heart disease.

High Density Lipoprotein (HDL)

High density lipoprotein (HDL) is sometimes called "good" cholesterol because it helps to remove excess cholesterol from blood vessels and reduces the risk of heart disease.

Triglycerides

Triglycerides are a form of blood lipid (fat). The level varies depending upon the timing of the most recent meal. The normal range listed is based on a 12-hour fasting specimen, so elevations are common for non-fasting samples collected for risk selection purposes.

Cholesterol/HDL Ratio

The cholesterol/HDL ratio is obtained by dividing the total cholesterol level by the HDL level. Higher ratios are associated with increased risk of developing heart disease.
